Hot flashes plague up to 80% of women going through menopause. The sudden intense heat, sweating, and skin flushing disrupt sleep, mood, focus and quality of life. Hormone therapy is effective but not ideal for some women given potential health risks. Fezolinetant offers a promising new oral non-hormonal option to control hot flashes. Sold under the brand name Veozah, here’s what you should know about using this next-gen medication.

How Does Fezolinetant Work?

Fezolinetant works by calming down the nerves that control hot flashes. It blocks a receptor in the brain called NK3, which helps switch off the neurons that overreact and cause hot flashes. With less hyperactivity in those hot-flash triggering neurons, the intensity and frequency of heat waves and sweating is reduced.

Unlike hormones which broadly act on many systems, fezolinetant specifically targets the nerves involved in hot flash symptoms. Just by preventing NK3 receptor activation, it helps get those temperature and sweat signals under control.

So in plain English – fezolinetant acts like a chill pill for the overactive neurons that generate hot flashes! It tells them to settle down by blocking signals at NK3 receptors.

Benefits of Fezolinetant

As an oral non-hormonal pill, fezolinetant offers convenience and avoids risks associated with estrogen or bioidentical hormones. Unlike antidepressants, it was designed specifically for hot flash relief. Benefits include:

  • Reduces hot flash frequency and severity
  • Starts working within 1 week
  • Taken as a simple oral tablet
  • Non-hormonal and not an antidepressant
  • Mostly well tolerated in studies

Potential Side Effects

Reported side effects in trials were generally mild and included:

  • Drowsiness, fatigue, insomnia
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Increased sweating
  • Muscle spasms

While promising, more data is needed on long-term safety. Discuss pros and cons with your doctor.

Offering a fast-acting non-hormonal option, Veozah is an exciting new addition to address hot flashes – one of menopause’s most troublesome symptoms.
